Institute Display 2018, “A Tribute to David Ruston”

In 2018, the theme was particularly special to the town, dedicated as a tribute to David Ruston.

David Ruston is a prominent figure in the Riverland community. Growing up in the town of Renmark, he and his father planted the first few roses around their family home in 1924, which has bloomed into one of Australia’s largest rose gardens. This was the inspiration for the Renmark Rose Festival. Ruston’s Roses (which was the family home) has more than 40,000 rose bushes and 3,000 different rose varieties.

Roses have always been David’s great passion which has seen him achieve world recognition as an expert on roses and a talented flower arranger. In 1984 Mr Ruston received an Order of Australia for Services to Horticulture.

He has achieved worldwide recognition with rose awards including the T.A. Stewart Memorial award 1966, the Australian Rose award 1982, the World Federation of Rose Societies Silver Pin 1988 and Gold Medal 2004, the Dean Ross Memorial award 1997 and the most prestigious rose award of all, the Dean Hole Medal in 1994 from the Royal National Rose Society.
